[Behind the Beat]: Hi Five is Just Warming Up, Catch Him at Spring Awakening

Remixing everything from DMX and Yung Joc tracks to artists who have become staples in EDM like NGHTMRE and Flux Pavilion, DJ and producer Hi Five has slept and breathed music since a very young age. His love of music started when he first picked up the guitar in third grade and his passion evolved ever since then exploring different instruments including drums, bass guitar, trumpet and even fine tuning his vocals.  Having recently opened for producer Joyryde (one half of U.K. dance group Let’s Be Friends) this past Friday (March 17) at Chicago’s The Mid, Hi Five (Bryan) shares what role music has played in his life and an exciting piece of news!

A Chicago native, Hi Five started taking his love of music seriously a little over two years ago and hasn’t looked back.  Many artists usually find inspiration within their studio walls and listening to what’s out there, but for Hi Five it’s a little different. “My main source of inspiration is going to shows as a fan. I always found experiencing dance music live is the biggest motivation,” said Hi Five. “The more I see live, the more ends of the spectrum I can find inspiration.” Experiencing the crowd’s emotions and energy is a great way to gage what gets a room going when it comes to music.

Did we mention that Hi Five has a twin brother who is also taking a bite out of the music industry? His twin brother Who Cares started producing shortly after he did but picked up DJing before him, “we’ve been helping each other succeed as much as we can. Between our combined producing, networking, and DJing skills, it’s definitely a mutually beneficial relationship,” explained Hi Five. “Just don’t put us in the same room when we collab[orate], because we’ll get on each other’s nerves real quick. We do our production separate.” Speaking of collaborations, Jauz, Habstrakt, Tchami, Sam F and Dusty Bits are a few names that Hi Five would love to link up with for a project.

This Saturday, March 25th, Hi Five be performing in Pittsburgh as direct support for Nightowls. In case you don’t make it out, no worries because you can also catch him at this year’s Spring Awakening Music Festival in Chicago alongside Who Cares as they take on the Solstice Stage on Saturday, June 10.
