Behind The Beat: Jay Hardway On Music, Travel, and His Fans
Dutch DJ and producer Jay Hardway is a man on the move. From working hard on developing his sound to traveling the world, we couldn’t help but inquire on the busy life of a world-famous music-maker. Keep reading to hear his thoughts on his music, his over-the-top fans, and everything in between.
How would you personally describe your genre to someone who hasn’t listened to Jay Hardway music before?
Euphoric, musical and emotional. I try to create music that touches people. Tracks that people will love for a long time.
How old were you when you realized you wanted to pursue music and what first sparked your interest in doing so?
I’ve been loving music as long as I can remember and was always busy with creating music or making noise as a small kid haha! Electronic music has been on the radio since I was a little kid as well so I was about 10 when I bought my first single “On The Move” by Barthezz. When I was 14 I found out about Fruity Loops which allowed me to create my own melodies. Since then I’ve been addicted to making music.
You’ve worked closely with Martin Garrix. How did the two of you first meet and come to collaborate?
We met on the Vato Gonzalez forum. We loved each others music and decided to meet up and make music together. Since then we became good friends and shared a lot of knowledge in making music.
Tell us about your new track “Scio”. What was the inspiration? How long did it take you to complete this track?
I wanted to show more of my musical personality. I can do more than just 128 big room music and that’s what I wanted to show people as well. The track shows my inspirations in music in general. It took me a couple months to complete this track.
Do you have a favorite country or city you’ve visited on tour?
There are so many special places in the world I love to visit. Tokyo Japan is definitely top 3! Such an amazing city with some of the biggest fans in the world! Always good to visit Japan.
How has your sound grown and developed since you first started in music?
When I just started I wanted to create the music I heard on the radio and on festivals. I was trying to re-create things a lot. After a while I realized that this is not the way to go, you have to be unique to stand out. I think you can hear that I always try to do something different every track! I think that is the biggest difference between my music now and when I just started.
Does Jay Hardway have any rituals before a set to get you in the “zone”?
Not really! I like to arrive at a venue or club just before my set, so I don’t have to wait for too long. When I have to wait for more then half an hour I get more nervous. When I arrive I decide what my first track will be, based on the crowd and the venue. After that it’s all about watching the crowd!
What has been the craziest thing a fan has done to get your attention?
Some things I can’t really mention here haha! But what amazes me is when fans wait for hours at the airport just to get a picture with me. Sometimes they even bring presents, which is amazing!
Are there any festivals we can plan to catch you at this summer?
I have a busy schedule for this summer. Best it to check out my Facebook page because a lot of shows haven’t been announced yet 😉
Do you have any hobbies outside of producing music?
I love to watch movies or play video games. Also I love to hit the gym sometimes.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Make music that you love and be yourself.
Alright, random one — if you could have any superpower, what would you choose and why?
Flying for sure. I would love to fly around like a bird, ultimate freedom!
What’s next for Jay Hardway and your music?
There is a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline and I’m working with vocalists more, which is awesome!
