[Behind the Beat] TyDi Speaks Up About His Music And His Love For His Fans

In his 15 years as one of the leading artists in electronic music, Australian songwriter, composer, record producer and DJ, TyDi, aka Tyson Illingworth, has seen, heard and done it all. Through his extensive discography, which includes five full-length albums, countless singles and remixes, and numerous EPs across diverse genres, he’s topped global charts, he’s toured the world and he’s made his indelible mark on the music world.

His sound is remarkable – and we can’t wait to hear what he has to say about his love for his music!Coming from Australia, how were you introduced to the DJ lifestyle and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?

I first heard electronic music when I was about 15; all European DJ’s. At the stage, ‘EDM’ wasn’t a thing and it was certainly not big in America. For some reason, I became addicted to the music and started pursuing it every way I could. When I finished high school I was traveling all over Asia and Europe playing music, it wasn’t until later in life that I moved to LA and electronic music and the ‘DJ lifestyle’ was a huge thing in the US. To this day I’m still just as passionate and in love with electronic music.

Who were your musical influences growing up?

BT, Armin Van Buuren, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Blink 182 and Dashboard Confessional. I’m lucky to have Dashboard Confessional on my last album!

You recently just released a track with Lola Rhodes, “Beautiful War”! What was it like collaborating with a beautiful voice?

It’s always amazing, I love working with new talented people. Nearly all of my songs have vocals, Lola’s is pretty special. It’s always a nice feeling being surrounded by people who enjoy making music with me.

Do the lyrics of “Beautiful War” speak out to you?

Yes absolutely, it’s really a relationship song. The lyrics are quite personal to me.

Were there any other influences that inspired you to produce the track?

Not really, I was just enjoying that type of summer-vibe music and wanted to release something that I connected with during the time.

I notice that you are very active on your social media outlets, especially Instagram! Is that your favorite way to reach out to your followers?

I’m also a Twitter addict, I’d say people can catch me the most on Twitter! I’m always on there… maybe too much.

How do you feel the technology has changed musicians today? Do you feel like it’s a good or bad thing?

Technology is exponentially getting better and better. It’s a great thing! Every day there are new sounds and more exciting ways to change music.

Do you feel there is a certain song that connects with the crowd?

I wish there was just one song that connected everyone! Maybe ‘Happy Birthday’!

Dogs or cats?

Cats!

Besides “Beautiful War”, TyDi has also released a brand new track, “Closing In”, featuring the lovely voice, Dia Frampton! He says that he wanted to make something that was larger than life. He did so by making this track so detailed and musically complex to make it unique.
