Catalonian Producer Uner Talks Music, Advice, and Even Prince’s

With The BPM Festival going on now, we’re amping you guys up for some of the shows best upcoming artists. Read below to see what Catalonian producer and DJ, Uner has been up to lately.

Q1. Your Facebook profile picture has “The End is Near” with 2016 over it. We have seen a lot of memes on the internet talking about how 2016 was one of the “roughest years” and we can’t wait for it to end. Is Uner’s Facebook photo a reference to that?

Yes, it was about the end of a very rough year. Of course it was good for me in many ways at the same time. Work has been fantastic, but there were also a lot of strange energies. So, I know that 2017 will be different, full of light and magic feelings.

Q2. In your bio it says your DJ sets are aimed at the dance floor. You have a lot of energy when you perform, how do you get hyped for your sets?

Yes, you know what – I love to dance to my own sets! Ha. I enjoy actually playing music, it gives me energy itself. As soon as I play the first track, it doesn’t matter if I haven’t slept and been travelling on a 16-hour flight, something goes ‘click’ and it’s all forgotten. I try to be healthy also, which helps. Make sure you eat right and sleep enough – even if it’s only a powernap!

Q3. What is your first memory of falling in love with music?

Honestly I think that I fell in love with music before I was born and still in my mother’s tummy. I do not really remember an exact moment, but ever since I have memories, I remember music and always being surrounded by it. I started to play the piano at only 4 years old, so I have had a long history with all types of music.

Q4. Who is your favorite DJ on the scene right now?

As I am often always touring at the weekends, it means I really don’t have that much time to go and see other DJ’s playing, apart from those who I am on the same club or festival line up with. Saying that, I have always been a big fan of Dixon, and of course one of the best for many years, is Laurent Garnier.

Q5. If you could collaborate with any artist, whether it’s a remix, an original song, or just going back to back on a set with them, who would it be?

Frank Wiedeman, for sure.

Q6. When you’re on the road traveling, what is something you always have to have with you?

Wow that’s a hard question, as I seem to have a thousand things with me when I am travelling. But since Netflix has started the new download option, its literally a must for every single flight!

Q7. What is the weirdest thing one of your fans has done?

Actually, I had one recently when I was in Marrakech about a month ago. A guy came into the DJ booth, and started to dance around – he was having a lot fun! Some other people then also followed him, to come and say hi to him. Suddenly something went wrong, and one of my controllers was on the floor and the cable came out the laptop. I asked him “Hey man, come on – what are you doing?”. He was apologetic, and was a strange moment. The club owners actually came up to me shortly after I spoke with him, and told me that he was a Prince of the Royal Family!!

You can imagine my face when I heard that and I was just trying to kick him out the DJ booth a few minutes earlier! At the end of the night, I spoke with him again and we actually ended up hanging out for the rest of the party – he was very apologetic, respectful and most importantly was having a great time and loved my music, so I was happy. It ended up being a very fun night.

Q8. If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice 18 years ago, when you first signed with your label, what would it be?

Hmmm I think that it would be “Mate, keep going this way, you’re on the right path.”

I would also repeat every single second of my life, and would never change anything. That’s what shapes us to who we are.

Q9. Music has a lot to do with fashion, so what is your outfit go to when you’re getting dressed for a performance?

Being comfortable is my priority. I normally have jeans on and a simple t-shirt. Sneakers are also the key – you need to be able to wear something all day long, all night and sometimes straight back to the plane with no sleep. We stand for so many hours, you got to get something super comfy.

Q10. What is next for Uner?

At the moment, apart from continuing to tour and also focus on my label, Solar Distance, the next project is my album. I have been working on it for a while, and its concept, and it’s coming along nicely. I cannot wait to finish it and be able to share with everyone.
