Cyantific AKA Jon Stanley, has been at the forefront of drum and bass for over a decade. Known for devotion to his decks, pinpoint accuracy in the mix and his ability to construct dance floor anthems has seen Cyantific DJ around the globe. We were able to catch up with Cyantific just before the release of his track “Under The Neon.”
Check out our interview with him below.
You have been a DJ for a decade now, thinking back, what got you into the music industry?
Pirate radio was definitely a big influence on me when I was at school. I decided pretty quickly that was what I was going to do with my life!
How has the industry changed since you started?
How hasn’t it! It’s a constantly changing landscape. The way people listen to music is different, the way they find it, and of course the way they make and promote it. The internet has a lot to answer for, good and bad.
Your latest track “Under The Neon” is comming out August 26th on Viper Recordings. Can you tell us the inspiration for this track?
I’m really into Tangerine Dream, the whole intro is a kind of homage to their soundtrack work. The chords were something that was inspired by a Kavinsky track from his album, they ended up quite different. The bass line was me trying to bring in a bit of the vibe from an old track of mine called Infinity. In a more general way it’s meant to sound like some 80’s action hero shit!
The relationship with the audience is crucial for a DJ, and yet it seems to be a fragile one. How do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?
Keeping the old stuff alive is important. Especially the tracks that perhaps aren’t considered anthems. I don’t really tailor what I play, I think promoters who book me have a pretty good idea of what I’m about musically, so I just have faith in that. I just like to make people have a good time, and don’t overthink it.
I’d love to work with D-Train or one of those funk guys. Closer to home TC, Phace, Sub Focus or Culture Shock would be fun.
The days aren’t long enough, damn them.
I’ve seen boobies fall out.
Surfing and living off the land, probably.
That’s hard. Something fun. Maybe Midas Touch by Midnight Star.
I listen to 80’s film montage music at the gym. Train! Fight! WIN!
What can we expect from Cyantific the rest of this year?
I’m working on my album at the moment, so that’s taking up all my time, but I’m sure there’s a single in there somewhere. Also I’ve done a remix for Kattison that’s out soon. And as ever my podcast Cyantific FM is out every 1st of the month.
