Featured Artist Techno DJ Shelley Johannson
Talented, Intelligent & drop-dead gorgeous, all but fail to justly DJ Shelley Johannson.
Having mastered the art of mixing vinyl early in her career, DJing has always been the core of her musical foundation. A true DJ at heart, no hardware presents a challenge and always equals in an unrivaled performance. Her technical prowess is equally matched by her brilliant set programming, undoubtedly well beyond her years. Techno, deep house and progressive, all a staple in her deadly arsenal.
Following her motto “One foot in the booth, one foot on the dance floor,” her energy in the booth is nothing short of infectious. The hunger for music does not end there. Commanding the decks has always been her strongest suit, until she channeled this passion in the studio.
How did you get involved in the music industry?
I played for a dance music event company that booked many talented artists. I had the opportunity to meet these DJs as well as converse with them about music production. I would also send my tracks to them asking for constructive criticism and input. I really have Ozmozis to thank for connecting me with other like minded individuals in the industry. I was introduced to some great label owners who liked my sound and as a result started releasing music.
Who have been your inspirations growing up who also inspire you today?
My inspirations growing up were female DJs like Lisa Lashes, DJ Colette and Sandra Collins. There was a time when I would listen to Hard House Euphoria mixed by Lisa Lashes or Colette – House of Om and think “I want to do that!” They made me feel like it was possible to follow my passion.
Let’s talk about your “Midnight Red” EP. The three tracks “Take It” “Leave You” “Love Is” are all intoxicating. Each with a different sound and all very seductive. What did you want your fans and new listeners to take away from this EP?
Music is like time travel… There are songs that I have such strong memory associations to that when I listen to them I actually feel like I’m in the same spot when I first heard the track. Years from now I hope my music can do that for someone, so they can be taken back to an authentic time in their life. The three tracks Leave You, Take It, and Love Is are about personal development and what I would want my listeners to take from this EP is to have life experiences because you will grow.
Tell us about your radio show One-Eighty. Where and when can we listen?
One-Eighty is an hour mix and I also post my live club performances. One-Eighty goes up on the first Tuesday of every month (that’s why we call it Techno Tuesday!) on SoundCloud. I would like to the expand the show and create a platform where listeners can hear exclusive tracks and guest mixes, so look out for that in the future 😉
What has been your favorite Festival or club to perform at so far?
The most memorable venue I’ve performed at is Stereo Live in Houston Texas. It’s like a festival inside a club! I do like playing in intimate, dark spaces where you’re within arms reach from the crowd and it feels like you’re partying too!
Craziest thing that has happened on during a set?
Something crazy always happens, but one time I was playing at an outdoor festival and I only brought one USB with me (this story is the reason why I always bring a back up). The girl on before me was playing on a Traktor controller and the DJ before her took the link cable for the CDJs! I was so pissed but we ended up using her laptop and equipment together! The crowd went wild and loved the unexpected back2back session! So much fun. I made a new friend and played songs I’ve never heard before haha.
You are known mainly for Techno, why that particular genre rather then House or Dance?
I love fun, soulful disco house and bouncy tech house music but when it comes to production techno feels right to me. When I first started producing I would try and make trance or more progressive house and the tracks would always turn into a techno sound lol, can’t help it.
What are some of the challenges you have as a female DJ in a male dominated industry?
Probably the same as the male DJs. Challenges exist for all artists at every level in their career and I believe any adversity is an opportunity to mature, gain experience and improve.
What is one track/song that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it? Any genre.
Reflekt – Need To Feel Loved (Adam K & Soha Vocal Remix) behind every girls favorite song is a story. This one will never get old.
Everyone has one, what is your guiltiest pleasure?
Collecting music. When it comes to buying music, plugins, vinyl, gear or anything music related I don’t care how much I have to spend, there is no price too high when I need a sound. I think it’s a problem actually haha.
Do you feel sex appeal plays an important roll in the industry?
Branding is important. I have a background in marketing and understand that in every industry having an image is imperative but at the end of the day it should be about the music.
What do you enjoy doing in your down time?
You can find me curled up in a warm blanket, clasping a cup of creamy coffee with my nose buried deep into a book. Seriously, nothing energizes me more than being alone with my thoughts and an enthralling book.
Secret celebrity crush? (we all have one of those too, I’ll take Channing Tatum LOL)
HANK GREEN. He is known for his many YouTube channels my favorite one being SciShow! I’m painfully in love with his videos and I’m mesmerized by his voice lol. Look him up, he has a certain charm about him.
If you were not a DJ/producer what would you be doing?
That’s really hard to imagine, but if I wasn’t in the music industry at all I would be involved in men’s fashion. Designing clothes, marketing, merchandising or product development.
Name something we would be surprised to know about you?
I really enjoy studying life sciences! I find pharmacokinetics to be the most interesting.
What are you most excited about in 2016?
Releasing more music and One-Eighty! I’ve been planning projects for this year involving the radio show and I’m excited to watch these ideas come to fruition.
Please let everyone know where they can follow you?
You can keep up-to-date with my latest releases and the radio show on www.facebook.com/shelleyjohannson and also www.soundcloud.com/shelleyjohannson
Any Shout-out’s or Thank you’s?
Just a thank you to the artists who gave me advice and valuable feedback on my music. If it wasn’t for those individuals I wouldn’t be where I’m today. Also to all my listeners, thank you for the support and for tuning in =)
