How To Help Victims Of The Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire

It has been a week since the Ghost Ship rave ended in tragedy when the hosting warehouse became engulfed in flames. Claiming the lives of 36 people, it ranks as the deadliest building fire in the United States in over a decade, a result of the venue potentially not being up to safety standards at the time of the fire.

This disaster hits especially close to home for members of the dance music scene, who are no strangers to holding underground, DIY raves and festivals. Aside from its emotional proximity, the incident also raises concerns about the living situations of young artists, especially as urban areas like Oakland continue to gentrify. Art doesn’t always pay, and many opt to take the affordable options over the safe ones. The warehouse acted as a collective home to artists in the Oakland area, and with only one victim having been a resident, it means that survivors still have a battle to face.

To help each of them and the many others affected by this tragedy, below are a number of organizations and campaigns that you can contribute to.

  • The Gray Area Foundation for the Arts has already raised over 500K for victims and their families as well as for survivors of the tragedy.
  • As noted before, only one victim of the fire actually lived in the warehouse. For the 20 residents who are now homeless, this GoFundMe is very close to its 25K goal.
  • If you cannot offer cash, this Google doc allows you offer any services ranging from food donations to a couch to sleep on. You’d be surprised what you can offer and who may need it.
  • The Trans Assistance Project began a fund in honor of three trans women killed by the fire, with additional donations to go towards the medical expenses of a trans survivor. For members of society whose lives are constantly in jeopardy, this campaign also serves as a way to support trans members of our artistic community.
  • And not to forget the 52 firefighters who extinguished the blaze, Oakland Firefighters Random Acts also collects donations that go towards these heroes.
