Martin Garrix and Carl Cox star in New EDM Documentary
There is no denying although EDM has been around since the 80’s, it is having a major mainstream moment. Thanks to a new EDM documentary What We Started, music lovers everywhere will soon understand how this came about.
The film details the history of electronic dance music through the eyes of Martin Garrix and Carl Cox. It addresses both the birth and development of EDM through the juxtaposition of their two very differently timed careers.
Barbados born Carl Cox, began his career as a hardcore/rave DJ and producer in Britain. He is a self proclaimed “founder of the sound” in EDM according to his website. His portion of the film gives EDM it’s context and explains the origin.
Meanwhile Garrix is currently the number one ranked DJ in the world according to DJ Mag. Ahead of Tiesto, David Guetta and Hardwell. Garrix’s view shows what it is like to be the top DJ in the industry at the moment.
Bert Marcus Productions has yet to set a release date for the documentary. Bert Marcus and Cyrus Saidi co-directed, co-produced and co-written the film.
Marcus tells Billboard that “the goal for us is to tell a story that is all-encompassing, dynamic, unexpected and certainly quite entertaining.” He alludes to a little bit of misrepresentation among the industry revealing he believes “this is a misunderstood genre with a rich and robust 30-year history and we felt it needed to be shared properly with the world.”
WME executive Pete Tong will serve as co-producer as well music supervisor for the film. He told Billboard “This is a film that honors the spirit of and gives a discerning perspective on different generations of this movement in an unprecedented way and leads you on a globe-trotting journey that explores a dynamic and multi-layered industry.”
