Mix Spotlight Artist DJ Xenia Ghali
Watch out for the very talented DJ Xenia Ghali hailing from Mýkonos, Greece. If you haven’t heard about her shame on you. Xenia sparks a fresh fire on the dance floor where ever she is. Not only is she a DJ, but she’s also a producer, songwriter, and classically trained musician, giving electronic dance music the dynamic female presence it’s been desperately missing on stage and in the studio.
Moreover, you can add “fashionista” to her repertoire as her trademark hand jewelry and striking style constantly turn heads. Most importantly, this enigmatic figure possesses a distinct power to make the whole world move when her songs play.
Check out our interview with this very talented and beautiful artist.
First I would like to say Thank You for taking this interview. It is an honor as we fully support female DJ’s who are kicking down walls in the industry!
It is truly my pleasure and thank you so much for your support! Being a female producer and DJ is definitely tough at times, so your support is greatly appreciated!
How did you get involved in the music industry?
I have been classically trained on the piano and flute since I was approximately 5 years old. When I was 15 I went through a huge rock phase and taught myself the guitar and drums. I formed a high school rock band in which I played lead guitar, and took my first steps into songwriting. That was when I realized that I had a huge passion for creating music. After I graduated high school, I went on to receive my Bachelor’s in Music Composition and Production in the UK. During my time there, I began going to a lot of House music parties and became infatuated by the whole scene. I invested in buying a couple of second hand Technics 1210 turntables and 5 vinyl House records and taught myself how to spin. One thing led to another and I began performing at local clubs until, eventually, I was doing shows at the Ministry of Sound in London. While doing shows, I began producing a lot of House and Electronic Dance Music as well. After I graduated from the UK, I received a Master’s in Music Composition, Production and Film Scoring from NYU and simultaneously started to professionally produce and DJ both in the States and in Europe.
Who have been your inspirations growing up who also inspire you today?
I have grown up with a lot of musical genres and styles. My inspirations range from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to Daft Punk. I am inspired by a lot of different artists and because of that, I fuse different things into something that I consider my own.
Lets talk about your latest track “Under These Lights” It is very intoxicating! What is the story behind that song?
Thank you! “Under These Lights” is a vocal House/EDM record, but really what is more significant is the song’s meaning. The world is in a very negative place at the moment. There is a lot of hate, anger, racism, discrimination and aggression. “Under These Lights” is about the importance of unity and love among all of us. It depicts a very optimistic and euphoric message, one of which I feel the world is missing right now.
You have just began a radio show called “X Hour,” posting your 4th episode. When and where can we listen to your show.
I release a new episode every 1st of the month! You can find new episodes and of course previous episodes at www.mixcloud.com/xeniaghali
With so many DJ shows popping up what sets yours apart from the others?
I’m small but feisty – haha! That’s my motto! I’m a small girl who likes to make big noise both in my music productions and my live shows. To me the most important thing in the world is relating and touching others and make them move (physically and emotionally).
From what I can see you love fashion. Do you have a favorite designer or designers?
I do! I absolutely love G Star. The clothes are very ‘me’, ranging from jeans to jackets! With regards to accessories, I love Eastpak bags. They have the coolest backpacks and they have really great bags for when I’m touring!
You have collaborated with Pitbull (yum),Wycleff Jean and Chris Brown. What was it like working with them?
I had the honor of working with Wyclef Jean on my single before “Under These Lights”, which was titled “Get Dirty”. Wyclef is one of the most incredible people I’ve met and by far the most talented musician. It was an indescribable experience working with him and to this day I can’t believe it! I did an official remix for Pitbull and Chris Brown’s song, “FUN”, which was released as part of the Official Remix Package. That was a huge honor and I am very thankful that my remix was a part of the official releases.
What are some of the challenges you have as a female DJ in a male dominated industry?
Unfortunately, it’s quite common that people to perceive female producers and DJs as “less serious” and “less skilled” than men. For me one of the greatest challenges is accepting that this mentality does very often exist. Despite that, I have never let this hold me back and I always love proving myself to anyone.
What is one track/song that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it? Any genre.
Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
Everyone has one, what is your guiltiest pleasure?
Mustard! I love it!
With everything you have been involved in so far what has been your most memorable experience?
When I was announced one of the two winners at the iStandard Producer showcase in New York, the year I had first moved there. I was the only female producer competing that year.
Secret celebrity crush? (we all have one of those too, I’ll take Channing Tatum LOL)
Haha, good choice! Hmmm, I’d have to say Josh Duhamel!
If you were not a DJ/producer what would you be doing?
Most likely an athlete! I played competitive tennis as a kid but picked music over it in the end!
Name something we would be surprised to know about you?
I’m actually a very low key person in my personal life. I enjoy movie nights, dinners, quiet bars and the beach!
What are you most excited about in 2016?
Lots of new music that I can’t wait to share with you and tons of shows both in the States and in Europe!
Please let everyone know where they can follow you?
Any Shout-out’s or Thank you’s?
Everyone who supports me and my music! Your love and energy gives me belief and in a very real way, I feel connected to you. It really is what keeps me going and most importantly what inspires me. THANK YOU for the bottom of my heart to every single person who has supported me.
To my incredible team who have been working hard with me and who believe in me, without you I’m only a girl with a dream!
A special shout out goes out to my family, who have always been there no matter what (even when I was doing shows and playing guitar in a high school band).
Finally, thank you so much Mix 247 EDM for this awesome interview!!!
