Mura Masa and Charli XCX – 1 Night (Single)

Master of the beats Mura Masa has a new song out with the lovely Charli XCX called “1 Night” and the song is definitely one you’ll be hearing a lot of this summer. With his first full-length album on the way, Mura Masa has been busy cranking out the beats and working with a number of featured artists. As a fan of Mura Masa’s earlier work like “Lotus Eater” and “Firefly,” I’m excited to see more from the DJ, and to hear the range his music is capable of.

1 Night” has a cool bell intro, a signature move of Mura Masa, but softer than most of his prior beats overall. Soft isn’t bad, especially when complemented by the airy vocals of Charli XCX, creating a blossoming effect when the rhythm starts to pick up. The claps come into play here, harmonizing with both the vocals, and in a fun way the lyrics too. The line “You are an exception” is a good example of this, wherein the claps affirm the statement in a way, which occurs enough to be witty rather than pretentious.

All in all, the repetition of “1 Night” isn’t overly poppy, and seeks something on a deeper level. There’s a melancholy to the super mellow drop, which seems to just float on in, and that again contributes to how harmonic the whole thing sounds. The steel drum at the drop is also something worthy of note. As a Mura Masa fan, I was totally surprised to hear the instrument, and really like what was done with the beat there. There’s so much range amid the pleasant surprises from both artists, I feel like Mura Masa and Charli XCX’s “1 Night” will be a huge hit this summer. Check out the official video below.

Electronic dance music has always been my go-to genre for as long as I can remember. I particularly enjoy drum n bass, psychedelic trance, and deep house. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from California State University, Fresno and a BA in English from SUNY Fredonia. When I’m not listening to new EDM music, I’m probably either bowling, writing speculative fiction, or sleeping.
