Listen: Yaeji – Drink I’m Sippin’ On (Single)

Of the newest chill tracks I’ve heard lately, “Drink I’m Sippin’ On” by Yaeji really sticks out to me. There’s this super mellow feel throughout the entire track, and the music video is really awesome. I also find the song itself to be unique for EDM. In the genre of rap, songs about a rapper’s drink of choice seem to be so common, they’re everywhere. “Drink I’m Sippin’ On” by Yaeji is unique, complex, and something relaxing to really sit down and listen to.

The start is downright ethereal. Everything is calm, the bass work immediately begins the mellow vibes, and the use of scratching effects is really balanced nicely. I also really enjoyed the use of droplet effects scattered throughout “Drink I’m Sippin’ On” as well. The use of bass stands out, especially in contrast to the synth work being done. The vocals are great too, really harmonic, and really definitive of a more downtempo EDM song.

The chorus is mad mellow. There’s some presence of trap elements amid the flowing vocals, which really cascade across the oral spectrum. The use of percussion comes in here as well, really adding to the mellow features of “Drink I’m Sippin’ On.” The repetition of the lyrics “so fine” just has a reassuring feel to it. The bass sounds like its being plucked from a bass guitar it is so clear and crisp. I love that feeling of slow illusion.

“Drink I’m Sippin’ On” by Yaeji is just an all-around amazing EDM song. The synth work is superbly done, so soulful, and absolutely mastered at the highest quality. When the song finally closes, and fades out, it just feels complete. “Drink I’m Sippin’ On” by Yaeji is an absolute must-hear from a break-through EDM artist who has great range, mad skills, and so much more to come.

Electronic dance music has always been my go-to genre for as long as I can remember. I particularly enjoy drum n bass, psychedelic trance, and deep house. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from California State University, Fresno and a BA in English from SUNY Fredonia. When I’m not listening to new EDM music, I’m probably either bowling, writing speculative fiction, or sleeping.
