Taking A Break From The Mundane: Mandatory Techno Festivals Outside The USA

Something can be said about traveling to a different country, breathing in the foreign air, sampling local cuisine, and trying to understand the alien vernacular. With that in mind, attending a music festival overseas is definitely something not to be missed out on. Sure nobody can hate on that one friend that’s attending Coachella, Bonnaroo, or Lollapalooza for the 8th straight year, but come on…where’s the fun and excitement in that? Take advantage of your youth, health, and hopefully good grace from work to give you all that time off and go try out something new!

With no further ado, as festival season kicks off, here is a list of the most well known or up and coming techno festivals across the globe that one should set their sights (and saving accounts) towards.

SXM Festival

Returning for its second year on the island of Saint Martin in the beautiful Caribbean, SXM Festival is quickly garnering more attention as a festival destination hot spot. Unfolding from March 15th – 19th, this festival already boasts a stellar lineup featuring artists such as Behrouz, Bedouin, Francesca Lombardo, Nina Kraviz, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Soul Clap, The Martinez Brothers, and more. Keep your eyes on this one, because it’s sure to blow up and gain rapid popularity. Because who wouldn’t want to party on the beach and then hop onto a yacht for a private set by your favorite DJ?

With a DGTL Amsterdam, DGTL Barcelona, and even a DGTL Sao Paolo this year, one can safely say that this party has reached international acclaim. Returning for it’s 5th year to NDSM Docklands in Amsterdam on April 14th – 16th, DGTL Amsterdam features artists like Âme, DJ Tennis, Adriatique, Tiga, and Rødhåd, for one party not to be missed.

Sónar Festival

Located in Barcelona, Spain, Sónar Festival has been around since 1994. To be held from June 15th – 18th, this festival showcases the world’s top leading techno artists. Featured artists include: Dubfire, Nina Kraviz, Marco Corola, Nicolas Jaar, a special Seth Troxler b2b Tiga set, Soulection, and The Black Madonna just to name a few. The skew in genre also leads to headliners such as Earl Sweatshirt and Nosaj Thing. This eclectic collection of artists playing over these three days in beautiful Barcelona, Spain means that there is definitely something there for everyone. Sónar+D as well as Sónar Around The World are further examples of the party’s ever growing expansion.

Sonus Festival

Held on the beautiful coastline of Novalja, Croatia between August 20th – 24th, Sonus Festival returns for its fifth year with an absolutely stunning lineup. A truly killer roster of techno artists featuring the likes of Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Maceo Plex, Pan Pot, Richie Hawtin, Solomun, Tale Of Us, and The Martinez Brothers. It was quite difficult not just listing the entire list of the artists that will be present.

Awakenings Festival

Returning for it’s mind boggling 17th rendition, Awakenings Festival returns to Spaarnwoude, Amsterdam from June 24th – 25th to celebrate it’s 20 year anniversary. Artists include Ben Klock, Claptone, Paco Osuna, Sven Vath, Nicole Moudaber, Black Coffee, Joseph Capriati, and Paul Kalkbrenner just to list off a few.

Time Warp DE

Ahh Germany, known by many as the mecca of techno music. Since 1994, Time Warp has been bringing the world’s leading techno artists onto its dance floors, and this year is no different. On April 1st, Time Warp will be returning to Mannheim, Germany bringing in top notch talent such as Carl Cox, Dubfire, Richie Hawtin, Rødhåd, and Solomun. This one day party goes on for 18 hours, on 6 different stories. Yeah, talk about a no brainer.

Kappa FuturFestival

Held in Turin, Italy on July 8th and 9th. Returning for it’s fifth year, Kappa FuturFestival has already announced it’s talent, which includes: Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Nina Kraviz, Tale Of Us, Sven Vath, Joseph Capriati, and Paul Kalkbrenner. Just another reason to go visit Italy.
