Zeds Dead Play Chicago’s Navy Pier – Deadbeats Tour

“Let me see those Zs in the air,” Canadian electronic duo Zeds Dead shouted as the first few beats of their recognizable track ‘Collapse‘ sounded throughout Chicago’s iconic landmark Navy Pier. They played at the large indoor venue this past Saturday (October 21) as part of the 2017 Deadbeats Tour helping close out its final stops. Supporting acts for the Midwest show featured  Ghastly, Ghostface Killah, K?d and Eprom.

Zeds Dead have been at forefront of EDM including dubstep as it first hit the scene during late 90s and early 2000s, and since then have stretched into various genres including house/future house, quite on the opposite spectrum of dubstep. Although they’ve been around for more than 10 years in the music scene, it was only until 2016 that they dropped their first album  Northern Lights followed by their compilation album Deadbeats Compilation 1 on their Deadbeats label featuring  Nebbra, Rezz, Megalodon, Memorecks, Pusher and Kid Froopy.

Their set not only welcomed an amazing production that included a bright, complex laser show but also a crowd ready to sing along–even when tracks were minimal, if any, on the lyrics. They stretched the musical gamut taking the audience back to some of their earlier hits like ‘Lost You‘ to recent ones including ‘Woman Wine‘ to songs from other artists like Jack Ü featuring Kiesza ‘Take Ü There.’ Of course what DJ set was complete this year without their own edit or inclusion of Travis Scott‘s ‘Goosebumps’? Rounding out the second half of their set was their house track ‘You Know,’ the unexpected collaboration that features Oliver Heldens, that brings back some old school house vibes and a heavy bassline.

Zeds Dead doesn’t fail to deliver when it comes to combining genres in one pretty stellar performance and sound. The one down side was the pesky cigarette smoke; it’s one thing to be in the open air and another to be stuck indoors with the puffs. Make sure to check out Hooks’ finished Chicago street art work.
