French Celebrities Rally Behind Gerard Depardieu Amid Rape Allegations
Prominent French celebrities and well-known figures have expressed their support for actor Gerard Depardieu following the recent allegations of rape and sexual assault against him. In a joint letter published in Le Figaro, the signatories described Depardieu as the victim of a “torrent of hatred” and claimed that he is being unfairly targeted.
The letter strongly argues that the allegations against Depardieu have been spread without regard for the presumption of innocence and emphasizes his significant contributions to the French cinema and theatre industry. Remarkably, two dozen of the 56 signatories are women, including acclaimed actress Charlotte Rampling and former French First Lady Carla Bruni.
Depardieu, who vehemently denies all the allegations, has praised the letter and commended the signatories for their courage. He has been under investigation for allegations of rape since 2020, with multiple women accusing him of sexual violence, including harassment, groping, and sexual assault.
Adding to the controversy surrounding Depardieu, a recent documentary shed light on accusations of sexual misconduct by 16 women and featured footage of the actor making obscene remarks and gestures during a visit to North Korea. These incidents have prompted disciplinary proceedings that could potentially result in Depardieu losing his Legion of Honour medal, which is France’s highest distinction.
However, the letter signatories have faced criticism from women’s rights activists, who accuse them of denying the reality of sexual violence. Activists are urging the celebrities to support initiatives against such abuse instead of defending Depardieu.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has referred to the situation as a “manhunt” specifically targeting Depardieu. In contrast, Depardieu’s family has denounced it as a conspiracy against him.
Depardieu has a history of controversial behavior, including brawling, drunk driving, and urinating in public. Furthermore, he is known for his admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin and holds Russian citizenship.
As the allegations against Gerard Depardieu continue to dominate headlines, the support he receives from French celebrities and the heated debate surrounding the presumption of innocence and accountability for sexual violence remain significant topics of discussion in France.
