Scientists in southwest England have made a groundbreaking discovery of the oldest fossilized forest ever known on Earth, dating back an astonishing 390 million years. This finding surpasses the previous record held by a forest in New York state by an impressive 4 million years.
The ancient forest, believed to have existed during the Devonian Period when life was first transitioning onto land, was populated by trees known as Calamophyton. These trees, which grew up to heights of 2-4 meters, had thin, hollow trunks and played a crucial role in stabilizing riverbanks and coastlines by trapping sediment in their root systems.
The study, published in the Journal of the Geological Society, sheds light on the rapid development of early forests and the diverse range of species that coexisted within them. In addition to providing a habitat for various invertebrates, the forest also revealed evidence of footprints and tail drags left by early anthropods.
