A recent study conducted by researchers at Stanford University and Gusto has revealed some interesting trends in remote work patterns. According to the report, the average distance between an employee’s residence and their employer’s location has more than doubled from 10 to 27 miles between the years 2019 and 2023.
The study also found that 5.5% of employees now live over 50 miles away from their employer in 2023. Notably, high-earning Millennials working in sectors such as Information and Finance & Insurance are more likely to live further away from their workplace.
Professor Stephan Meier of Columbia University predicts that we will see more companies adopting a hybrid work model in the coming year. This prediction is supported by a survey conducted by USA TODAY, which found that remote work tends to decrease as income levels rise. Only 18% of individuals earning between $125,000 and $200,000 per year reported working fully remote, while those making between $75,000 and $100,000 are more likely to have hybrid work arrangements.
Additionally, a study by Upwork revealed that one-third of hiring managers believe that remote work has actually increased productivity. Colorado was identified as the state with the highest percentage of remote workers at 21%, while Mississippi had the lowest percentage at 5.5%.
These findings point to a shifting landscape in the way we work, with more employees living further away from their workplace and companies embracing flexible work arrangements. It will be interesting to see how these trends continue to evolve in the future.
