Tragedy Strikes in Zambia as American Woman Killed in Elephant Attack
An American tourist was tragically killed in Zambia after an elephant charged at a vehicle carrying tourists in Kafue National Park. The incident also left another woman injured, who was then taken to a medical facility in South Africa. In addition, four other people suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Wilderness, the company responsible for the trip, reported that the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by a bull elephant during a game drive. The CEO of Wilderness expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that they are supporting those affected by the incident.
The victim has been identified as 79-year-old Gail Mattson by her family. She was described as a grandmother and retired mortgage professional. Mattson’s family emphasized that the incident was a freak accident and not the fault of the elephant or the driver.
Zambia is a popular destination for safari travelers due to its national parks and quality guides. Kafue National Park, where the tragic incident occurred, is known for its diverse wildlife, including lion and leopard sightings.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time an American tourist has lost their life in Kafue National Park. In 2016, Bianca Rudolph died in a similar incident, leading to her husband being sentenced for her killing.
The community is saddened by this tragic event as they mourn the loss of Gail Mattson and continue to support those affected by the devastating elephant attack.
