Massachusetts Governor Declares State of Emergency as Migrant Numbers Surge
In response to a significant influx of migrants seeking shelter, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has declared a state of emergency. With nearly 5,600 families, or over 20,000 individuals, currently residing in state shelters, the situation has become increasingly pressing for local authorities.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of families seeking shelter has risen by a staggering 80%. These migrants are reportedly arriving from other states via plane, with approximately 50 migrant families landing in the past 48 hours alone.
Recognizing the strain the surge in numbers has placed on the state’s resources, Governor Healey has called upon the federal government for financial assistance and expedited work authorizations. These measures would aid the newcomers in finding employment, helping alleviate the burden on the state. To further support the migrants, Massachusetts has also launched a migrant relief fund, aiming to raise money for essential goods and services.
Under Massachusetts law, eligible families are entitled to emergency shelter, further underscoring the state’s responsibility to accommodate the influx. This commitment has garnered support from community leaders in over 80 cities and towns throughout the state, all backing Governor Healey’s emergency declaration.
Massachusetts is not alone in facing challenges related to the increasing numbers of migrants. Other states, including New York, Texas, and Florida, have also dealt with similar issues. Notably, there have been instances where states led by Republicans have transported migrants to states governed by Democrats. Last year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis transported 49 Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
As the situation continues to unfold, Massachusetts remains dedicated to providing assistance to individuals seeking refuge within its borders. With support from community leaders and advocacy for federal aid, Governor Healey aims to address the growing needs of the migrant population while ensuring the welfare of both newcomers and existing residents.
