Nvidia, the renowned American technology company, is reportedly planning to introduce three new chips exclusively for the Chinese market. This news comes in the wake of the United States’ recent decision to block Nvidia from selling specific high-end artificial intelligence (AI) chips and gaming chips to Chinese companies.
According to local media reports, the upcoming chips are known as HGX H20, L20 PCIe, and L2 PCIe, and they might be announced by Nvidia as early as November 16. However, when approached for comment on the matter, Nvidia declined to provide any further information.
Just last month, Nvidia disclosed that it would be unable to sell modified versions of two AI chips and a gaming chip to China due to new export restrictions imposed by the United States. These restrictions came into effect on October 24 and had an immediate impact on Nvidia’s operations in China.
Nvidia has long been a dominant player in China’s AI chip market, accounting for more than 90% of the country’s $7 billion industry. However, with the U.S. restrictions now in place, it is anticipated that domestic Chinese firms like Huawei Technologies will have a greater opportunity to expand their presence in the market.
In fact, it has been reported that Chinese internet giant Baidu has already placed a significant order for Huawei AI chips in anticipation of the U.S. restrictions. This move further indicates the changing dynamics within China’s tech industry as businesses seek alternatives to fill the void left by Nvidia’s absence in the market.
The introduction of these new chips by Nvidia is expected to have significant implications for both the company and the Chinese tech industry as a whole. As the battle between global tech giants and national interests continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Nvidia’s latest move will be received by the Chinese market and its competitors. For now, all eyes are on the company as it prepares to reveal its next step in this ever-evolving landscape.
