Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins has officially requested a trade from the team after talks of a contract extension have stalled since March 2023. Despite his love for Cincinnati and desire to stay long term, Higgins is disappointed by the lack of progress in negotiations.
The timing of Higgins’ trade request is significant as it comes just before the NFL’s legal tampering window opens ahead of free agency. Higgins, who just finished the final year of his rookie contract, could be given the franchise tag worth $21.8 million for the upcoming season if a long-term deal is not reached by July 15.
Injuries played a role in Higgins’ lowest season of production last year, where he appeared in 12 games and caught 42 passes for 656 yards and five touchdowns. Bengals executive Duke Tobin expressed the team’s desire to keep Higgins for at least another season but did not rule out the possibility of a potential trade.
This is not the first time a prominent Bengals player has requested a trade, as offensive tackle Jonah Williams sought a move last year that was not entertained by the team. It remains to be seen how the Bengals will handle Higgins’ trade request and if they will be able to work out a deal to keep the talented wide receiver in Cincinnati. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
