Thieves in Montreal Using Apple AirTags for Vehicle Theft, Vermont Residents Warned
Recent reports from Vermont news sites WCAX and NBC5 have shed light on a new method being used by thieves in Montreal, Canada to facilitate vehicle theft – Apple’s AirTags.
Police officers in Burlington, Vermont have issued a warning to drivers who have recently visited Canada after two residents found Apple AirTags in their vehicles upon returning from trips to Montreal. One of those residents, Ethan Yang, was able to locate the AirTag placed in the front grille of his vehicle using his phone.
Ryan McLiverty, a cyber analyst, has noted a new spike in criminal activity involving AirTags being used by criminals in Montreal to track and steal cars. The stolen vehicles are believed to be sold abroad or used for drug trafficking purposes.
Despite the concerning news, AirTags do have built-in safety features to alert owners if the tag is not within a safe distance. Additionally, AirTags can be detected by Android phones and Apple’s Tracker Detect app.
