The European Union Investigates Clash Between Apple and Epic Games
The European Union is currently investigating a heated clash between tech giants Apple and Epic Games. At the heart of the issue is Apple’s decision to ban Epic’s developer account, thereby preventing the gaming company from launching its popular Epic Games Store in Europe.
The disagreement first arose when Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney accused Apple of not complying with the Digital Market Act, labeling their policies as “hot garbage.” Apple had imposed certain rules on Epic, including notarization requirements, a fee per install, and proof of credit for financial disputes.
In response to Apple’s requirements, Sweeney stated that Epic was acting in good faith. However, Apple ultimately terminated Epic’s developer account, citing a breach of contract.
This latest dispute is just one in a series of conflicts between the two companies, dating back to a 2020 lawsuit over the popular game Fortnite. The EU’s involvement in this matter is particularly significant as the Digital Market Act (DMA) goes into effect, potentially leading to fines for Apple’s violation of the law.
It is worth noting that Apple recently faced a €1.8 billion fine from the EU for restricting competitors in the music streaming app market. The outcome of the investigation into Apple and Epic Games could have far-reaching implications for the tech industry as a whole.
