Conservative Attorney John Eastman Facing Disciplinary Action Over 2020 Election Strategy
Conservative attorney John Eastman is facing potential disbarment in California as a result of his involvement in developing a legal strategy to keep former President Donald Trump in power after the 2020 election. Judge Yvette Roland has recommended that Eastman be disbarred for misleading courts, moral turpitude, making false statements, and plotting with Trump to hinder the transfer of power.
Eastman is also facing criminal charges in Georgia for allegedly conspiring to overturn Trump’s loss in the state. The State Bar of California has alleged that Eastman violated the state’s business code by making false statements in an effort to overturn election results.
A close adviser to Trump, Eastman wrote a memo outlining a plan for then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject legitimate electoral votes for Joe Biden in order to keep Trump in power. Judge Roland ruled that Eastman’s actions were not justified as zealous advocacy and constituted a departure from professional norms.
In response to the decision, the States United Democracy Center celebrated, stating that it sends a message that no one is above the law. Eastman, who has been a member of the California Bar since 1997 and served as a law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas, will be placed on involuntary inactive status while the Supreme Court considers his case.
The outcome of Eastman’s disciplinary action will have significant implications for his legal career and could serve as a landmark decision in holding attorneys accountable for their actions in high-stakes political matters.
