As spring arrives in Richmond, Virginia, so do the dreaded seasonal allergies. The city is currently covered in a yellow blanket of pollen, causing discomfort for many residents. Patient First Dr. Elizabeth Jenkins suggests starting antihistamines before symptoms appear to help combat the effects of allergies.
According to the CDC, more than 25% of both adults and children in the U.S. suffer from some form of allergy. Richmond is ranked as one of the top 10 most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies, making it a particularly difficult time for locals.
Global warming is only intensifying the issue, with shorter and milder winters leading to an earlier start to the pollen season. 12 On Your Side First Alert Meteorologist Andrew Freiden advises residents to avoid exercising outdoors and wear masks when outside to reduce exposure to pollen.
To alleviate symptoms, washing pollen off and doing saline rinses can provide some relief. However, with warm temperatures expected to continue, pollen levels are likely to stay high in the coming days, making it important for residents to take precautions to protect themselves from seasonal allergies.
