Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins appears to be heading towards free agency as contract negotiations with the team have hit a standstill. Despite ongoing communication between the two parties, they have been unable to reach a new deal.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons are expected to be in the mix for Cousins once he hits free agency. It is reported that an offer for Cousins could exceed $40 million per season, a number that surpasses what the Vikings can offer due to NFL contract rules.
Cousins, who has been playing on fully-guaranteed contracts for the past nine seasons, is unlikely to receive guaranteed money in a longer-term deal from the Vikings. If he does not receive the deal structure he desires, he will likely explore other options outside of Minnesota.
In the meantime, Nick Mullens is expected to step in as the Vikings starting quarterback until at least the NFL Draft in April. The uncertainty surrounding Cousins’ future with the team adds an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming offseason for the Vikings and their fans. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
