French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping on a diplomatic trip to the Pyrenees mountains, where the leaders discussed trade and foreign policy issues. Despite Xi showing little indication of offering major concessions, Macron’s goal is to reduce the trade imbalance between the two regions and improve access for European firms in China.
During their meeting, the two leaders enjoyed lunch in the mountains and watched traditional dancers perform while sampling locally sourced food. Macron presented Xi with gifts including a woollen blanket, a Tour de France jersey, and armagnac from the region. Some progress was made in trade agreements, with China agreeing to allow imports of pig origin protein feed and pork offal from France.
Macron’s personal diplomacy style was on display, contrasting with Xi’s more reserved demeanor. The trip was seen as more about creating policy space in anticipation of potential political changes, such as a return of Donald Trump to the US presidency. The European Union faced a significant trade deficit of 396 billion euros with China in 2022, prompting Macron to address this issue during Xi’s visit.
French cognac makers were reportedly optimistic following the visit, as Xi displayed an “open attitude” towards resolving trade disputes. Despite the lack of major concessions from China, Macron remains committed to negotiating fairer trade terms and increasing opportunities for European businesses in the Chinese market. The diplomatic trip symbolizes the ongoing efforts to strengthen the economic relationship between France and China.
