Minnesota’s New State Flag to Feature North Star Symbol
In a move to modernize its state symbols, Minnesota is set to unveil a new state flag. The design, which was chosen by the State Emblems Redesign Commission on an 11-1 vote, will now go through the legislative process before becoming official on April 1, 2024.
The centerpiece of the new flag is an eight-pointed North Star, set against a dark blue background in the shape of the state. On the right side of the flag, there is a solid light blue field representing the Mississippi River, as explained by the commission’s chairman. The choice of the North Star is a nod to Minnesota’s state motto, “Star of the North.”
The impetus for the redesign comes from the criticism surrounding the existing flag, which dates back to 1957. Depicting a Native American and a white settler, many consider it offensive and historically inaccurate. The goal of the new flag and seal is to be more inclusive and representative of all Minnesotans, including Indigenous communities and tribal nations.
The new seal, which will accompany the flag, includes a loon and the Dakota name for Minnesota: Mni Sóta Makoce. Andrew Prekker, the designer whose initial concept was revised to create the winning design, expressed his gratitude for being able to contribute to state history.
However, not everyone is in favor of the chosen design. Republican members of the commission have raised concerns, arguing that the new seal violates statutes and elevates one race above others. Democratic Secretary of State Steve Simon believes that a vote on the flag and seal would be unconstitutional according to Minnesota law.
Minnesota is not alone in contemplating a redesign of its state flag. Several other states, including Utah, Mississippi, Michigan, Illinois, and Maine, are also considering revamping their flags to better reflect their diverse populations and promote inclusivity.
The North American Vexillological Association, which specializes in the study of flags, currently ranks Minnesota’s old flag as 67th out of 72 U.S. and Canadian state and provincial flags. The hope is that the new flag will soar in popularity and gain recognition as a symbol that truly represents the values and identity of all Minnesotans.
