Astronomers and space enthusiasts were treated to a rare and spectacular event as Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks recently experienced a surprise coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun. The NASA spacecraft captured this epic encounter in a new video, which also features Jupiter in the background.
Nicknamed the “devil comet” for its eruptive behavior, 12P is known for shooting an icy mixture of gas and dust into the solar system, creating a bright and misshaped coma. The comet, which orbits the sun once every 71 years on a highly elliptical trajectory, spends most of its time in the outer reaches of the solar system.
The recent CME event triggered a disconnection event, temporarily blowing away the comet’s dusty tail before it regrew. This phenomenon has been observed with other comets as they slingshot around the sun.
In addition to its encounter with the sun, the comet has also been photographed in proximity to other celestial bodies, including the Crescent Nebula and the Andromeda galaxy. Currently visible to the naked eye low in the west about an hour after sunset, 12P provides a prime viewing opportunity for skywatchers.
The stunning video captured by NASA showcases the beauty and unpredictability of celestial events, highlighting the ongoing research and exploration of comets and their interactions with the sun. As Comet 12P continues its journey through the solar system, astronomers will eagerly await its next captivating display.
