Target to Limit Self-Checkout to 10 Items in Stores Nationwide
Target has announced that they will be limiting self-checkout to 10 items at most of their nearly 2,000 stores across the country starting this Sunday. This change is aimed at improving customer experience and speeding up the checkout process.
The decision to limit self-checkout comes as Target, along with other retailers like Walmart, have been facing challenges with technology issues and concerns about theft associated with these kiosks. Target will also be expanding their traditional checkout lanes to accommodate the shift in their self-checkout policy.
These new limits were first tested at 200 Target stores last fall before being rolled out nationwide. The company attributes the change to changing consumer patterns, including a preference for minimal contact during the ongoing pandemic.
Additionally, Target has been experiencing a rise in organized retail crime across its stores, prompting the need for increased security measures. This move aligns with other retailers who are also adjusting their self-checkout options, with Walmart even closing some contactless lanes.
A recent survey revealed that Gen Z, in particular, favors self-checkouts due to the ability to swipe items undetected. As retailers continue to adapt to the changing landscape of shopping preferences, Target’s decision to limit self-checkout items is just one way they are striving to enhance the overall shopping experience for their customers.
