1.5 Million Dehumidifiers Recalled Due to Fire and Burn Risk

In a major consumer safety alert, more than 1.5 million dehumidifiers have been recalled amid concerns over a risk of fire and burns. The recall affects models manufactured by well-known brands such as GE and Kenmore and was initiated by Chinese appliance company Gree USA. This comes after 23 fires and 688 overheating incidents were reported, all linked to these dehumidifiers.

The recall specifically covers units sold between 2011 and 2014 under various brand names at major retailers. It is advised that consumers immediately unplug these dehumidifiers and seek a refund by contacting Gree. The company has set up a procedure to handle the recall and ensure affected customers receive their refunds promptly.

This is not the first time Gree’s dehumidifiers have faced a recall. In 2013, 2014, and 2016, the company issued similar recalls due to potential safety concerns. Disturbingly, there have been reports of deaths related to house fires caused by these defective appliances. It is clear that this ongoing issue requires immediate attention and corrective action from the manufacturer.

Recently, Gree USA was fined $500,000 for failing to inform the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of the defects in their dehumidifiers. This penalty reflects the seriousness of the situation and emphasizes the importance of prompt communication regarding potentially hazardous products.

Affected consumers are urged to visit Gree’s website to register for the recall and obtain a refund. The dehumidifiers, which were originally sold for prices ranging from $110 to $400, pose a significant risk to households and should be dealt with immediately.

The safety of consumers should always remain a top priority. With such alarming reports, it is crucial for the public to take the necessary steps to ensure their well-being. By promptly unplugging these dehumidifiers and contacting Gree for a refund, individuals can safeguard their homes from the potential dangers that these defective appliances may present.
