Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the CDC is launching the Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements to support all US hospitals in identifying cases of sepsis and improving survival rates. The survey also revealed that 73% of hospitals have established sepsis committees to address this critical issue. Additionally, 55% of hospitals allocate specific time for sepsis program leaders, indicating a recognition of the importance of dedicated resources.
One key finding from the survey is the opportunity for improvement in patient recovery through better integration of Antibiotic Stewardship Programs in sepsis care. Only 55% of hospitals currently integrate these programs, highlighting a potential area where patient outcomes can be further enhanced.
The Sepsis Core Elements, part of the CDC’s initiative, include various components such as leadership commitment, accountability, multi-professional expertise, action, tracking, reporting, and education. By following these elements, hospitals can create a standardized approach to sepsis management and improve patient survival rates across the nation.
The launch of the Sepsis Core Elements aligns with Sepsis Awareness Month, during which the CDC will provide educational information on preventing infections that can lead to sepsis. This concerted effort aims to increase awareness and knowledge among healthcare professionals and the general public to effectively prevent and manage sepsis cases.
