Former NCAA Division 1 athletes Riley Gaines and Paula Scanlan became targets of protesters opposing the “Save Women’s Sports Act” in Texas. The protesters gathered at the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame at Texas Woman’s University to rally against the bill, which had recently been signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the protesters not only expressed their opposition through words but also resorted to throwing objects and spitting at those who supported the legislation. This chaotic and aggressive behavior escalated further when Michelle Evans, the leader of the Independent Women’s Network’s Austin chapter, was assaulted while leaving the building to observe the protest.

Evans described the protesters as “rabid” and revealed that she was threatened and physically attacked. Fortunately, law enforcement managed to apprehend one suspect, who was issued a citation for misdemeanor assault. The event not only left attendees shaken but also raised concerns about the treatment of young girls who were reportedly harassed and screamed at by the protesters.

Riley Gaines, a former athlete and host of the OutKick podcast “Gaines for Girls,” applauded Governor Abbott’s leadership and expressed hope that other states would follow suit in implementing similar legislation. Paula Scanlan, another former athlete, took to social media to share her experience, stating that protesters blocked the exits and harassed attendees.

Videos circulating online captured the intensity of the protests, showing protesters screaming slogans and getting in the faces of young girls. Governor Abbott condemned the actions of the protesters and emphasized his desire for a peaceful environment.

The bill being celebrated at the event, officially known as SB 15, requires public school teams in Texas to be designated based on students’ sex assigned at birth. This legislation is set to go into effect on September 1. It is worth noting that at least 20 other states have passed similar legislation.

While many attendees view SB 15 as a step in the right direction for protecting women’s rights in sports, some believe that more needs to be done. The issue of transgender female athletes participating in sports has become a contentious topic that is just one aspect of a larger debate surrounding gender identity and inclusivity.
